Why experience still matters
What I think doesn’t get talked about enough is the day after you leave.
What I think doesn’t get talked about enough is the day after you leave.
For me, that was 1 March 2025. After years in corporate life, I suddenly had no meetings and no familiar routine. Just a blank page and the expectation that I’ll know what to do with it. This feeling is what prompted me to create The Experience Exchange.
The podcast is about what happens when experienced professionals step into a phase of life that’s less defined, but full of possibility.
In our first episode, we explored the question: Why does experience still matter?
The part most people underestimate
When people talk about leaving corporate life, they tend to focus on the upsides. You’ll have more time, freedom, and choice. That’s fantastic!
What gets less attention is what we lose. Naveen breaks this down in a way I hadn’t seen articulated before. It goes well beyond job titles or income. We lose our identity.
The reality behind the transition
There’s also a tendency to assume that experience naturally translates into clarity. That once you’ve built a long career, the next step should be obvious. In practice, this often isn’t the case.
You can go from being very certain about your role in the world… to questioning what that even looks like without the structure you’ve been used to for decades.
In this episode, we explore the uncertainty and the unexpected upside that comes with it.
A different way to think about “what’s next”
How should people approach the question of what comes next?
The instinct is to think long term: “What am I going to do for the next 25 or 30 years?” It sounds sensible, but in reality, it’s paralysing.
As Naveen put it, that’s simply too big a question. There are too many unknowns and too many moving parts.
A more useful way to approach it is by focusing on the next few years. So, the problem changes from something overwhelming into something you can actually engage with.
We unpack why this is often the difference between staying stuck and moving forward.
Where to start
This first episode sets the foundation for what The Experience Exchange is really about.
If you’re thinking about what comes next, or already in the middle of that transition, I think you’ll find it a worthwhile listen.
